Courage should be classified as good and bad courage. I have listened to many lectures where the speakers emphasized on two C s- Courage and Confidence. If one is encouraged to be courageous and confident, he or she is never told about the good and bad of confidence and courage.
In this age of the internet, we are observing many so-called courageous acts. I want to mention one which is an age-old ritual like not disclosing the facts about women’s menstrual cycle in public. Why we followed that process for a long time is the fact that women should be within certain boundary so that some part of her life remain exclusively private. And it should be. Whether a male or a female, everyone should have something entirely personal of his and hers. There is no harm in it. But now the age is becoming “courageous” – bringing out everything in public to grab attention. I feel, we have explored everything of life and now peeping into the private life, secret parts of life and encouraging people to pull out all the secrets in the name of taboo-breaking. It takes a lot of courage for a young girl to hold a sanitary napkin to take up a so-called challenge, take a photograph and post it on facebook!! I wonder where this kind of activities will take us!! The people who are on facebook already know the hygienic way of handling menstrual cycles, what extra mileage you get in spreading awareness about sanitary napkins through social media?
Of course, it is the matter of personal choice. You choose whether you want to show courage with a positive goal in mind or a negative attitude towards the society. A shooter who kills school children is courageous and a soldier fighting for his own country is also courageous. The choice is between good and bad courage. Courage must have an objective which gives a positive direction to society otherwise it is detrimental to society.
